Dämpfer werden eingesetzt um die Klangfarbe bzw. die Lautstärke des Instrumentes zu verändern. Bei Blechblasinstrumenten ist der Dämpfer ein Hohlkörper aus Holz, Metall oder Kunststoff der in den Schalltrichter gesteckt wird. Bei der Trompete werden überwiegend Metalldämpfer (Aluminium, Kupfer) verwendet.
Der Sound über diesen Dämpfer ist ziemlich dünn und mittig. Der Klangeffekt wird auch als "nasal" bezeichnet.
