Am re-entering after almost 30 years. "Earlier" muffled with handkerchief and tape.
Today Moongel.
Advantage: the fur does not "suffocate", unlike tape-hankie mix.
Disadvantages: none

The blue damper pads do what they are supposed to: improve the sound, make the drums more defined and are good to use.
And nice and blue!!

In the past I always damped my skins with tape and Tempo handkerchiefs. This had the disadvantage that if you wanted to undo the damping, residues remained on the skin and it was often difficult to estimate the appropriate amount of material used for the desired sound. With the Moongel Pads this is much easier. They stick independently, can be removed as easily as without residue and improve the sound the way I want it. Only one disadvantage they have: They are very susceptible to wood chips, which arise while playing and these are also difficult to get off. Does not affect the sound, but looks just not so nice.
