Variant Mackie Onyx Producer 2.2 Audio Interface
This rating has been translated automatically. Original language
The initial situation:
My minimum requirement was 1x mic/line input and a midi interface to be able to record musical sketches at home, but above all to have audio interface and midi in one device. It's not that easy to find such a device: Midi is only available for 2 channels or more. So my choice fell on this little gem, where I was especially attracted by the name Mackie. So far I had recorded with a borrowed Sapphire USB, then with an RME Hammerfall (PCIe). Qualitatively, these recordings were always good to very good, but the operation was always rather a matter of luck, especially if you do not know the matter in detail - like me. Since this will not change much, I wanted an interface that meets the requirement Plug & Play for the most part.
Unbox, install, play:
The metal housing and input controls make a solid impression, and the arrangement of the controls is self-explanatory. Only the large monitor knob makes a somewhat cheap impression, but if that is the only point where savings have been made, I will overlook it. I use Windows 10 on an already somewhat outdated Acer mini-PC, which I modernized with an SSD (although Intel i3 and purchased during Windows 7, it now runs surprisingly fast again).
After downloading and installing the USB/ASIO drivers from mackie.com (very pleasant that only ONE download was offered there, I'm getting fed up with version lists ;)) the device was also ready for use. First listening impressions with MP3 and WAV files via the standard media player and headphones promised a lot.
Integration with software:
I use Ableton Live 11 Standard for recordings. Here the Producer could be selected without problems in the standard configuration. Midi signals were also processed without problems. The latency of microphone signals is minimal, moreover, input and DAW signal can be brought into suitable ratios via a mix control on the interface. At no time did I have to, and still do, change anything in the configuration, let alone manually shift latency values back and forth. THAT is a thing of the past. Thankfully.
Quality and Performance:
Here I must preface that I have made recordings so far with a Shure SM58 and a Sennheiser 421, from therefore the quality of the input signals is certainly still expandable, but as far as these recordings are concerned, I am completely satisfied with the result: the signals arrive loudly and transparently in the computer and also two simultaneously processed signals plus midi recording, i.e. the maximum that the device should be capable of at the same time, land correctly in the arrangement. In view of the moderate computer performance, this definitely convinces me as a home user.
I'm therefore absolutely happy with my choice: easy to use, inexpensive all-in-one solution (also for on the road) and absolutely correct quality. For people in my situation, there's therefore a buy recommendation!
